Governing bodies and committees

The university’s governing bodies comprise the rectorate and the Senate. Further committees include the Council for practical studies and the students’ union.

In the Senate, representatives of full-time lecturers, the studies section and students decide on important issues relating to teaching and studies, eg the university’s constitution, while members of the Council for practical studies advise the university in all matters related to the practical side of the study programme.

In order to fulfil their personal and social needs, as well as to promote cultural and sporting interests, students can form a students’ union during their theoretical studies.

The senate is one of the university’s governing bodies. It comprises

  • the rector or ex officio rector

  • four elected representatives of the full-time lecturers (three-year term of office)

  • one elected representative of other staff from the studies section (three-year term of office)

  • two elected student representatives (one-year term of office).

In each case, the senate members are elected by the group that they represent. Each senate member has an elected deputy.

The Senate meets once a quarter and makes decisions regarding

  • the constitution,

  • the introduction or withdrawal of study programmes,

  • whether and how many university places will be made available for other institutions,

  • rules governing research,

  • the curriculum,

  • other university regulations, in particular a quality assurance concept including an evaluation regulation, election regulations and development planning,

  • the proposal for the appointment of the rector,

  • the rector’s proposal for the appointment of the deputy rector,

  • proposals to award teaching assignments by the rector,

  • proposals to appoint full-time lecturers.

The Senate is consulted on

  • all matters of fundamental importance relating to teaching, study, training and research,

  • the rector’s draft for standard cost accounting, including staffing,

  • changes to the Regulation on the training and examination for the Upper Intermediate Service of the Deutsche Bundesbank (Verordnung über die Ausbildung und Prüfung für den gehobenen Bankdienst der Deutschen Bundesbank)
